Westminster Bridge by Joseph Farrington, 1789 (the original bridge) Westminster Bridge is a road-and-foot-traffic bridge crossing over the River Thames in London, linking Westminster on the west side and Lambeth on the east side. The bridge is painted predominantly green, the same colour as the leather seats in the House of Commons which is on the side of the Palace of Westminster nearest to.. The original Westminster Bridge was of an elegant design. Spanning 1,223 feet of river, it was 44 feet in width allowing for wide pavements and the passage of three carriages abreast. Until the early 18th century the only way to cross the River Thames downstream of Kingston was to pay to pass over London Bridge, or take a ferry or a water taxi..
